Module6 Unit17 Lesson1 What’s so funny?  

   

Ⅰ. Teaching aims:  

1.     to revise past tenses;  

2.     to practice using past perfect continuous;  

3.     to study word play and tell a story in the past

Ⅲ. Teaching process:  

1.     Words-building  

Get S. recite the new words in 5 minutes and then do the multiple choice after new words learning.  

(1)   harmony; harmonious; be in harmony with

2.     Fast reading and match the titles  

Get S. to read through the three texts in 5 minutes to get the main ideas and match the pictures and titles (P20 ex1); check answers together.  

3.     Second reading and fill in blanks  

(a) Get S. read the texts for the second time (8 min)  

(b) During the reading, try to underline some useful words and phrases by themselves;  

(c) After the second reading and learning some language points, do the fill-in-blank practice to review the texts.  

(d) Some language points in the text:  

(1)   have trouble/problems/difficulties/a hard time (in) doing sth.  

have fun/pleasure (in) doing sth.

(e) Grammar: Circle out the past perfect continuous in the text; study the meaning and the form and usage of the tense; compare it with past simple by practice (P21 ex4,5,6,8,9)  

had been doing: to describe a longer activity that lasted for a period of time before the main event (past simple)  

(1)   This afternoon, I was in the town center, where I had been shopping.  

(2)   One afternoon, hundreds of unlucky passengers who had been expecting to board a flight to   New York   were told it had been cancelled.  

(3)   An angry man, who had been queuing for some time, pushed his way to the front.
