Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Lead in:

Introduce some different music styles to the students to intrigue their interest in the topic to be discussed in today’s lesson.

A music quiz is arranged in the part. In the quiz, students are asked to listen to 5 extracts about music and tell what the style of the music is. The last piece of music is the Yellow River Piano Concerto by Kong Xiangdong.

Introduce some basic information about Kong.

Step 2 Pre-Reading:

The students read the title to predict what is going to be talked about in the text. The teacher introduces the function of a headline in a newspaper article to students. (A headline is the title of a newspaper story, printed in large letters at the top of the story, especially on the front page. The headlines are the main points of the news which are read on radio or television.)

Step 3: Fast Reading:

 Task One: Scan the first paragraph for the 5Ws(who, what, where ,when and why)

    Task Two: Read the first and last sentences of each paragraph and try to match the main idea of each part.

Step 4: Intensive Reading:

The passage is divided into four parts. Students are told to do intensive reading one part after another. Different exercises are arranged in each part.

Step 5: Post-reading task: True or False

Based on the comprehension of the details of the passage, students are supposed to tell whether they are true of false. If they are false, students are required to correct them.

1.Kong is a world-famous pianist. He plays not only classical music, but folk as well.

2. Kong combined Chinese folk with the piano because he wanted to make himself famous.

3. Because of Kong’s persistence(坚持) and talent, he became a great pianist at last.

4. As a famous pianist, Kong surprised his fans by giving a concert of Chinese folk music yesterday.

5. Kong’s change in his appearance showed that he paid no attention to Chinese folk music.

6. Kong wants to play Chinese music in order to make the world learn about China.

7. When he was 18, he got his first international prize in America.

Step 6: Summary: Reading Strategies for news stories

Read the parts that interest you.

You don’t have to read the whole article.

Just read the headline and the first paragraph to get the gist(main idea) of what is in the article.

The first paragraph will usually tell you the 5Ws (who, what, where, when, and why).

Step 7: Interview

Work with your partner to make an interview between a reporter and Kong Xiangdong. You can choose Kong’s road to success or his music as the topic. (Other topics will do.)

Step 8: Homework

    Write the story in your own words and retell it to your friends.
