T: Well done. For listening part, you needn’t to catch every word but some key words. In picture A, the key words are busy and stressful. In picture B, it is the sheep’s sound. In picture C, matches. While, in picture D, it is school.

Today, we have two more men with two different lifestyles. They will tell us what they are doing during one day. Please open your book and turn to page 8, let’s learn Lesson 1 A Perfect Day. First I would like to ask you: What do you think is a perfect day? What is your ideal lifestyle? Please think the two questions when we are learning this lesson and then I will ask some of you to present your ideas at the end of this period.

First, let’s go over the key words in exc.1.

III. Reading (28mins)

Step 1: Lead-in

(The teacher shows some pictures to explain the key words.)

T: Now, point out what kind of TV programmes they are.

Ss: Sports programmes, the news, TV series, cartoons, game shows, films, talk shows, music programmes.

Task1. Speaking (Pair-work)

T: Please work in pairs and ask your partner’s the following three questions.

1.Do you ever watch too much TV?
   2. What are your favourite kinds of TV programme?
   3. How much time do you spend watching TV every day?

Ss:…

T: Great! So, are you a couch potato? What does couch potato mean? Who knows?

Ss:…

T: OK, let me tell you. A couch potato means someone who watches lots (some would say too much!) of television. They spend a lot of time sitting on the couch and watching TV. As students, we shouldn’t spend too much time watching TV. On the one hand, it’s bad for our eyesight. On the other hand, it’s a waste of time. But some TV programmes are good for us. They can widen our view and broaden our knowledge, such as CCTV 10(Outlook English Speaking Competition…).

Step 2: Scanning

Task1: Filling the blank (8mins)

T: Mr. Brian is a couch potato. Let’s see what he does during his day. Please scan the first passage, fill in the blank and then choose some words here to express his lifestyles.

Time

What does he do?

Until about half past ten

Turn on the television and watch the children’s programmes and old movies

In the afternoon

Watch another good old film, take Tina for a walk

In the evenings

Watch TV series or sport and the news again

At six o’clock

Watch the main news

At nine thirty

Watch a good play on BBC2

At night

Watch more films

At two o’clock

Switch off the TV

T: Do you all finish it? Any volunteer who wants to have a try?

S: ….

T: Well done! From this form, we get the idea that Brian watches a lot of TV. So, we call him “couch potato”. He spends a lot of time sitting on the couch and watching TV. Therefore, if someone spends a lot of time sitting in front of the computer and clicking the mouse, what will call him?

Ss: Computer potato/ Mouse potato…

T: Not bad! We call him mouse potato.

Task2: Group Discussion

T: Now work in a group and answer the following two questions:

<!--[if !supportLists]-->         <!--[endif]-->Q1: Is Brian a lazy person? Is his lifestyle healthy? Why or why not?

<!--[if !supportLists]-->         <!--[endif]-->Q2:What do you think Youve got the world at your feet mean?

<!--[if !supportLists]-->         <!--[endif]-->Does Mr. Brian have a perfect day? Which word will you choose to describe Brian’s lifestyle?

Ss: Yes, he is.

Ss: No, it is not healthy.

Ss: It means you will know all the information without going out. Lazy, boring…

Task3: Q & A

T: We know Mr. Brian spends too much time watching TV and he doesn’t have a perfect day. Now Let’s see Mr. Bob. How is his day like? From the topic, we come to the idea that he is a workaholic. Who knows workaholic and anyone who wants to describe the picture for us?

Ss: Workaholic means a person who works long time without having a rest. In the picture, we find that Mr. Bob is still working until 10 p.m.

T: Fantastic! Please answer the following three questions:

Q1: How does Bob spend his morning and evening?

Q2: Why does Bob’s family complain(抱怨)?

Q3: Why does Bob work so hard?

Then, I will pick someone to tell us the answers.

Ss:…

Suggested answers:

<!--[if !supportLists]-->         <!--[endif]-->A1: Bobs morning is very busy with very little time to get dressed and have breakfast and he has all kind of urgent matters. His evening is not easy, either. He has documents to read and never goes to sleep until mid-night.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->         <!--[endif]-->A2: Because he seldom has time to for fun and other activities with his family.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->         <!--[endif]-->A3: Because he wants to make more money for his family and he likes being busy.

T: Very good!

Step 3: Improving (6mins)

T: Since we know something about Bob’s one day, so can you use some words to describe him?

Ss: Busy, tiring, stressful...

T: All right. Bob is involved himself in the job, thus we nickname him “workaholic”. Pay attention, “aholic” is a suffix. So, we call a person who addicts to alcohol “alcoholic” and a person who likes to go shopping “shopaholic”, etc.

T: Do you think Bob lives a healthy life? Why or why not? Work in pairs and exchange your opinion with your desk mate.

Ss: It is not healthy. Because he works too lot and rests less, it will do harm to his health.

T: Very good! As a saying goes: “all study and no play make John a dull boy”, therefore we had better make a balance between work and leisure.

Task1: Discussion

T: At the beginning of our lesson, I have given you two questions:

<!--[if !supportLists]-->         <!--[endif]-->What do you think is a perfect day?

<!--[if !supportLists]-->         <!--[endif]-->What is your ideal lifestyle?

Now please exchange ideas with your desk mates.

Ss:…

T: Good, well done!

IV. Check Keys in Exc. 7

T: Only five minutes left, let’s check the answers in exc.7.

T: Now please turn to page 9 and do exercise 7. I will give you 2 minutes and then we will check together. Pay attention, use the correct form.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->1.       <!--[endif]-->As the mother of four children, my days are filled with cooking and cleaning!

<!--[if !supportLists]-->2.       <!--[endif]-->Doing research and writing reports take up a large part of my day.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->3.       <!--[endif]-->I don’t enjoy watching TV with my brother as he always switches over to the programmes that he wants to watch.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->4.       <!--[endif]-->Switching on the light. It’s really dark in here!

<!--[if !supportLists]-->5.       <!--[endif]-->I try to do the homework that I bring back from school as soon as I get home.
