I always felt sorry for the people in a wheelchair. Some people, old and weak, cannot   36

“I’m just like you!” I wanted to scream. “The only difference is you’ve got legs,  51   I have wheels.”

People in wheelchairs are not   52  . They see every look and hear each word. Looking out at the faces, I finally understood: I was once just like them. I treated people in wheelchairs   53

It was not yet eleven o’clock when a boat crossed the river with a single passenger who obtained his transportation at that unusual hour by promising an extra fare. While the youth stood on the landing place searching in his pocket for money, the boatman lifted a lantern, by the aid of which, together with the newly risen moon, he took a very accurate survey of the stranger’s figure. He, a young man of only 18 years, was evidently country bred (乡下长大的), and now, as it seemed, on his first visit to town. He was wearing a rough gray coat, which was in poor shape, but which had seen many winters before this one. The garments under his coat were well constructed of leather, and fitted tightly to a pair of muscular legs; his stocking of blue yarn () must have been the work of a mother or sister, and on his head was a three–cornered hat, which in its better days had perhaps sheltered the grayer head of the youth’s father. In his left hand was a walking stick, and his equipment was completed by a leather bag not so plentifully stocked as to inconvenience the strong shoulders on which it hung. Brown, curly hair, well–shaped features, bright, cheerful eyes were nature’s gift, and worth all that art could have done for his adornment (装饰物). The youth, whose name was Robin, paid the boatman, and then walked forward into the town with a light step, as if he had not already traveled more than 30 miles that day. As he walked, he surveyed his surroundings as eagerly as if he were entering London or Madrid, instead of metropolis (大都市) of a New England colony.

56What time of year was in this story?

       ASpring.              BSummer.            CFall.                  DWinter.

57The boatman was willing to take Robin across the river because          .

Bhe saw Robin young and rich

Che was going to row across the river anyway

Dhe felt sorry for Robin because he looked poor

58The stockings that Robin wore were obviously           .

Awell worn              Bhandmade           Cvery expensive      Dmuch too big

59How did Robin appear when he walked into town?

AHe was tired.                                    BHe seemed very sad.

CHe was cheerful and excited.             DHe seemed frightened by his strange surroundings.

Catherine Destivelle is rock star. She loves rock, but she can’t sing or play the guitar! She is a rock climber and a big star in France and Italy. She is the most famous woman climber in the world because she climbs without ropes. She climbs in many countries but most often in the French Alps near Chamonix, where she lives. She started climbing near her home in Paris when she was five. Then, at fourteen, she joined the French Alpine Club to learn more, but immediately she climbed better and more quickly than the older members of the club. She won her first competition in Italy in 1995.

Three years ago she found a new route up the Dru Mountain near Chamonix. The climb took eleven days and for four days the snow was so heavy that she could not move. Last year other climbers tried to follow the new Destivelle Route, but they failed. They are going to try again this year.

People always ask her about her climbing. She says, “I climb because I’m in love with mountains. I like touching the rock and reading the face of the rock. I like it a lot. I felt at home on the side of a mountain. I prepare well before I go, so I’m never worried.”

Catherine chooses new mountain from books-like buying from a shopping catalogue(目录)! “I see a nice mountains and I go to climb it!” Her next mountain is in Pakistan. She is going there next month“It’s much bigger than the Dru, so it’s going to take longer to climb. An American climber, Jeff Lowe, is coming with me to help. ”

Malaria, the world's most widespread parasitic(寄生虫引起的) disease, kills as many as three million people every year—almost all of whom are under five, very poor, and African. In most years, more than five hundred million cases of illness result from the disease, although exact numbers are difficult to assess because many people don't (or can't) seek care. It is not unusual for a family earning less than two hundred dollars a year to spend a quarter of its income on malaria treatment, and what they often get no longer works. In countries like Tanzania, Mozambique, and the Gambia, no family, village, hospital, or workplace can remain unaffected for long.

Malaria starts suddenly, with violent chills, which are soon followed by an intense fever and, often, headaches. As the parasites multiply, they take over the entire body. Malaria parasites live by eating the red blood cells they infect (感染). They can also attach themselves to blood vessels in the brain. If it doesn't kill you, malaria can happen again and again for years. The disease passed on to humans by female mosquitoes infected with one of four species of parasite. Together, the mosquito and the parasite are the most deadly couple in the history of the earth—and one of the most successful. Malaria has five thousand genes, and its ability to change rapidly to defend itself and resist new drugs has made it nearly impossible to control. Studies show that mosquitoes are passing on the virus more frequently, and there are more outbreaks in cities with large populations. Some of the disease's spread is due to global warming.

For decades, the first-choice treatment for malaria parasites in Africa has been chloroquine, a chemical which is very cheap and easy to make. Unfortunately, in most parts of the world, malaria parasites have become resistant to it. Successful alternatives that help prevent resistance are already available, but they have been in short supply and are very expensive. If these drugs should fail, nobody knows what would come next.

68. People suffering from malaria___.

A. have to kill female mosquitoes

B. have ability to defend parasites

C. have their red blood cells infected

D. have sudden fever, followed by chills

69. Which of the following may be the reason for the wide spread of the disease?

A. Its resistance to global warming.

B. Its ability to pass on the virus frequently.

C. Its outbreaks in cities with large populations.

D. Its ability to defend itself and resist new drugs.

70. It can be inferred from the passage that___.

A. no drugs have been found to treat the disease

B. the alternative treatment is not easily available to most people

C. malaria has developed its ability to resist parasites

D. nobody knows what will be the drug to treat the disease

71. Which of the following questions has NOT been discussed in the passage?

A. How can we know one is suffering from malaria?

B. How many people are killed by malaria each year?

C. Why are there so many people suffering from malaria7

D. What has been done to keep people unaffected for long7

E

Now let’s look ourselves as a species in relation to ecosystem balance.

Modern scientists believe that humankind, like other animals, evolved (进化) through millions of years of changes and adaptations to the environment and that our most direct evolutionary ancestor was probably an earlier species of the primate (monkey, ape) group. Despite this similarity with other creatures, however, the evolution of humankind differs from that of other species in one important and unique way.

In other species evolution has led to specialization, both in the species abilities and in its place within the environmental structure. For example, the giraffe(长颈鹿) is much adapted to feeding on treetops, but it is also specialized and thus limited to feeding on trees and shrubs (灌木). Only with great difficulty can it bend down to graze on the ground. Similarly, the anteater is extremely well adapted to eating ants but is unable to catch or eat other animals. The same is true for countless other species.

For humankind it is opposite. Our evolution had led to a very generalized ability. Our highly developed intelligence and ability to make and handle tools mean that we can do almost anything. Humans evolved in such a way that we are able to move into every environment on Earth and even into space. No natural competitor offers great resistance, and other natural enemies such as disease have been controlled.

Said another way, we see in humankind a great imbalance between biological potential and environmental resistance. The result is the rapidly increasing world population, frequently referred to as the population explosion. Further, to support our growing population, natural ecosystems are being increasingly displaced by human habitations, agriculture, and other human supporting activities.

72From the passage we can infer that in the course of evolution           .

Ahumankind is very important to earlier species, such as the primate group

Bhuman beings are limited by the environment while animals are not

Chuman beings become more and more different from each other

Dhumankind has experienced a generalization rather than specialization in ability

73According to the passage, primate includes such animals as             .

Amonkeys and anteaters(食蚁兽)                   Btigers and apes

Capes and monkeys                                        Dmonkeys and giraffes

74According to the passage, evolution has made it possible for humans to          .

Aincrease the population  Bresist natural offers  Cgo to the moon Dcure all diseases

75According to the author, imbalance between biological potential and environmental resistance has resulted in            .

Athe population explosion                            Bthe destruction of human habitations

Cthe growth of natural ecosystem                 Dthe specialization of human

书面表达

Every student will be faced with the question after he passes the college entrance examinations: should I choose a good major or a good university first? Some students prefer to consider majors first so that they can learn what they are interested in. It will also make it possible for them to take their favourite jobs in the future. However, those who think differently believe that the environment is important to one’s development and that graduates from leading university are often more likely to find a good job.

In my opinion the best choice is a good major at a good university. If we cannot obtain both, the first thing to consider is a good major, because no matter where we study, we can still achieve a lot in a certain field if we try our best.
