第一部分阅读(共两节 , 满分35分)

第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5, 满分25分)

阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中, 选出最佳选项。

Family Vs Technology

Modern technology certainly changes family behavior, but does it really damage family life as many people fear? Not necessarily, says Dr. Silva, a professor in Sociology(社会学) at the Open University, she also argues it is wrong to assume technology erodes(腐蚀,侵蚀) the quality of family life.

"There is the idea that technology has an influence on the family and the family suffers. My take is quite different," she explains. "Technological change happens because people's lives change. And it is people's choices of how to live that creates processes of innovation(革新) as well. The family has a role like the economy or like technology itself in changing the world. The imagination is important in driving the things technologists want to find for our daily lives. People desire to see nature as it is, so color television comes about," she says.

In another case, the increase in working mothers helped create a market for labor-saving kitchen equipment. "The time that women have to shop every day for food is no longer available so there is a need to have a refrigerator for food storage," says Dr. Silva. "The need to cook that food more easily and quickly, means you have developments in cooking technology like the microwave oven (微波炉). The microwave oven already existed because it was developed for the navy during World War Two but it wasn't used in ordinary families until the early 1980s.

"Technologies for housework were as important as those for work itself," she says, "So washing machines, refrigerators and microwave ovens are terribly important. We couldn't imagine what life would be like if we didn't have them. "Technological changes in the kitchen have played an important role in the changes of family behavior, creating a new social focus in the home.

"With advanced technology, you can feed the family in an easier manner. People can do housework with less difficulty. But that doesn't mean that family practices are not important — it's just a different way of doing things."

21. What is Dr. Silva's attitude towards the effect that technology has on family life?

A. Worried. B. Optimistic. C. Puzzled.     D. Uncertain.

22. What causes advances in technology according to Dr. Silva?

A. People's love for nature.

B. People's desire to change the world.

C. Great changes in people's way of life.

D. The wonderful imagination in inventing things.

23. What can we learn from the passage?

A. The microwave oven was first used by working mothers.

B. People cook less because of modern kitchen equipment.

C. Technology has little effect on the changes of family behavior.

D. People need less skill to do housework due to advanced technology.

B

At 23, my career got going. I was midway through a master’s degree at The London School of Economics and Political Science and had been hired as a part-time reporter for a finance website. I got a great one-month review and my boss asked if I was interested in staying with the company after graduation.

However, balancing graduate studies with work was challenging. To deal with it, I checked my real self at my office door. I came in to work, greeted my colleagues and listened more than I contributed in each morning meeting. The small team I worked with often seemed busy, so rather than giving ideas that might get turned down, I stayed back.

After four months, my boss called me into his office. The meeting was going well until he told me that despite the great work I had produced, the team had held a meeting and decided, “We don’t think it’s the right fit.”

I must have looked confused. “You’re ambitious, intelligent and will be very successful,” my boss said. “But you haven’t made enough of an effort to join the team. You lost the enthusiasm you showed in your interview. That won’t work long term.” I couldn’t believe that performing well at my job wasn’t enough to keep it. But I knew my boss was right.

“Don’t leave before you leave.” Because we work so hard for success, we don’t like to think that we hurt ourselves sometimes. But each of us must change when necessary. In trying to earn a full time job, I “leaned back” in order not to show too much of myself or my lack of expertise. I learned the hard way isn’t the way to achieve your goals.

24.Why was the author offered a job at the company at first

A.She just got her master’s degree in finance.

B.She greatly impressed her boss in her first month.

C.She had quite a lot of experience in finance reporting.

D.She showed her special financial talent while working there.

25. Why did her boss call her into his office one day four months later?

A. She didn’t produce the great work.

B. She cared little about other members in her team.

C. She was concerned only about her own success.

D. She didn’t show enough enthusiasm in teamwork.

26.What does the author intend to tell us in the passage

A.We should always keep up our enthusiasm at work.

B.Expertise and experience are greatly valued in the workplace.

C.We should not shy away from sharing our ideas when working in a team.

D. It’s unwise of women to show themselves off when they are taking part in teamwork.

C

Parents will do anything for their children. Whether it would be the food, clothes, or the place they live in. Parents will always make sure their children have the best of everything. One of the biggest concern that parents currently have is educating their children. They are faced with lots of difficulties when it comes to education for their young ones. Choices include private school, charter school, public school or home schooling.

Fortunately for parents, there are a variety of different strategies that they can take in order to increase their childs overall intelligence. According to Ross A. Thompson, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of California at Davis, a childs brain will actually reach 90% of its full size by the time they start kindergarten.

Researchers at Northwestern University in Chicago concluded that playing a musical instrument directly affected the brain stem, the lower section of the brain. Moreover, children that learn an instrument at an early age tend to continue it when they are older. And numerous studies show that a well balanced meal is essential for a childs mental as well as physical health. Some other researchers recommended that a second language should be taught when children are in preschool. They state that three to four years of age is the perfect time and that any age under four would work perfectly fine for a child's brain development.

The average child will learn how to read between kindergarten and second grade. Many parents can give their children a jump start by teaching them to read before they start school. Children could have anadequate background of the alphabet and sounds of words. before attending school. This can be done by simply reading to them whenever you want The more comfortable they get,the easier the process will be.

27. What can we infer from the first paragraph?

A. Parents meet a new challenge when raising their kids

B. Parents find it hard to satisfy their kids various demands

C. Parents have more choices in offering education to their kids

D. Parents get actively involved in the process of their kids' growth

28. What suggestion may the researchers in the passage make?

A. To train kids as early as possible.

B. To try as many means as possible.

C. To help kids develop as fully as possible.

D. To use as many available resources as possible.

29. What does the third paragraph mainly discuss about?

A. The effective ways to help develop children’s brains.

B. The proper time to teach children to learn languages.

C. The vital factors to have a great effect on children’ s health.

D. The practical steps to arouse childrens interest in study.

30. We can replace the words “jump start” in the last paragraph with.

A. inspiration              B. introduction         C. suggestion           D. promotion

第二节(共5小题;每小题2, 满分10分)

阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Can we trust our memories? Psychologist Loftus, an expert on false memories, doesn't think so.   31 Are people with false memories lying? Not at all, says Loftus. They really believe their memories.

In one experiment on false memories, Loftus talked to people about their childhoods. They didn't know each other, but 36 percent of them had the same memory. What was it? They remembered hugging Bugs Bunny at Disneyland. But wait a minute.   32   Their memories were false.

33  Loftus says it is easy to put a false memory into someone's mind. How? In the Bugs Bunny experiment, Loftus talked to people who had visited Disneyland as children. Then she asked them about Bugs Bunny. She asked if he had soft ears. She asked if his body was furry. Later, more than one-third falsely remembered hugging Bugs Bunny.

When we remember something,  we use all of our senses: sight, touch, taste, smell, and hearing. That is why Loftus used the words "furry" and "soft" in the experiment. Those words helped people imagine the experience.   34  They felt his soft fur.  It seemed so real. They were sure it really happened.

35   Loftus says it shows the dangers of false memory. Of course, a false memory of Bugs Bunny is not dangerous, but consider this situation-the police ask an attacked victim to recall what happened. If they aren't careful, they will find only false memories instead of the truth. The real criminals will go free.

A.  False memories are really misleading.

BThey saw Bugs Bunny in their imagination

CThese memories can become stronger as time goes on

DBut what is the purpose of the Bugs Bunny experiment

EA false memory is a memory of something that never happened

FHow could a group of strangers all have the same false memory

GBugs Bunny is not a Disney character and he was never at Disneyland

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

On a cold Friday night, a poor artist stood at the gate of the subway station, playing his violin. The young violinist was a student at an Arts College named Joseph, who did so every day in order to earn his tuition fees. He planned to attend advanced studies in Vienna and had booked the flight for the next morning. Though the music was great, people were quickly going home for the weekend. Joseph was playing his last chapter when a middle-aged man looking pretty excited slowed down his pace and put 50 dollars into the hat, for which Joseph was grateful.

The next night, the young artist came to the gate of the subway station as usual, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. Different from the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it on the ground and put some stones on it. Then he began playing the violin.

Before long, the young artist was surrounded with many passers-by, who were all attracted by the words on that paper. It said, “Last night, a gentleman put an unexpected thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim it as soon as possible.” It caused great excitement and curiosity. They were dying to know what the unexpected thing could be.

Dedicated to Ms Wang Liqing:

Dear teacher,

On this special occasion, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for what you have done for me and wish you  a happy Teachers’ Day.

I remember meeting you for the first time in the Geology class. Tall and skinny, you appeared and walked to the platform, greeting us with a big smile. Listening to your class, I felt happiness, not only because of being exposed to knowledge, but for having the privilege to be student of such a great teacher. It is you that inspired me to choose teaching as my career.

Thank you for being always gentle, caring and encouraging, all of which lights up my life when there is darkness and hesitation. May you enjoy prosperous years ahead!

Yours,

读后续写

Just at the moment a middle-aged man rushed through the crowd to the violinist. After glancing quickly at the paper on the floor, his face was aglow with excitement and disbelief. He took a deep breath and then stammered: “Is ... is it a... a lottery ticket? My five million dollars lottery? ” Joseph stared at him with a smile, nodding. Yes, Joseph recognized him. It was this middle-aged man who appeared extremely excited and generously put 50 dollars inside his hat, just between which a lottery was attached.

The man thanked Joseph again and again because it was very essential to him. His company was facing bankruptcy, as a consequence of which he even couldn’t pay his employees. Yesterday good luck seemed to have dropped from the heaven that he unexpectedly won the lotteryHaving heard this, Joseph felt it was more worthwhile and appropriate to change the flight and return the lottery to the man who showed mercy to him—Love comes from love.

录音稿

(Text 1)

M: The red car with two doors is nice. And I like the color.

W: Don’t forget we have three kids.

M: That’s true. I guess we need the white one with four doors.

(Text 2)

W: Pacific Travel Company, Jane speaking. How can I help you?

M: Hello, it’s Stuart Gould here. I’ve booked a two-day group tour with your company and I need to make some changes to the original booking.

(Text 3)

W: You don’t look very well. Is there anything I can do?

M: No thanks, maybe I’ll go home early today.

W: Yes, I think you should. But don’t forget to tell our manager first.

(Text 4)

W: We’re having the meeting on Monday. That’s the day after tomorrow. Can you give me the report by Sunday?

M: OK. I’ll try to finish it as soon as possible.

(Text 5)

M: I’m worried about the exam in chemistry.

W: Me, too. Mrs. Smith always sets a hard paper, doesn’t she?

M: You’re right, and I failed last time.

(Text 6)

W: How about eating out tonight for a change?

M: It’s an idea, I suppose. Where shall we go?

W: There’s a new Italian place which has just opened.

M: That might be worth a try and we can take the bus.

W: Let’s walk there. It’s not far.

M: OK.

W: And we could invite Amelia and Rob, too.

M: But it’s too far for them. They’d need to drive there. Besides, Rob has a flight to London tonight.

(Text 7)

M: Linda! I was looking for you. I wanted to ask you what you are planning to do this weekend.

W: What’s up, Doug? I was supposed to watch a concert with my sister, but she canceled our appointment at the last minute. Now I have no plans.

M: We are planning to go climbing in the Azusa Mountains on Saturday. You really must join us.

W: That sounds great, but I haven’t climbed for a while. I’ll get tired easily.

M: All you have to do is walk and enjoy the scenery of the mountains along the way. The mountain is not that tall. There’s no way you can’t do it. Plus, we are going to have a delicious picnic at the top of the mountain.

W: OK. I certainly love picnics. I’m starting to get excited about climbing now! I’d better get a good pair of shoes.

(Text 8)

M: Hey, what about these ties? Which do you prefer, the green one or the black one?

W: I prefer the black one but I think you’ll take the red tie I saw in Camden Market. The color suits your jacket perfectly.

M: Yeah.

W: What do you think of this dress?

M: It would look really good with high heels.

W: High heels? I don’t like high heels much. I find them really uncomfortable.

M: I guess it would look good with the shoes you’re wearing. Are you getting the dress?

W: I’m not sure … I’d like to look in the market first before I decide whether to buy it or not.

M: I’d rather go for a coffee than look at more clothes now.

(Text 9)

W: What are you reading?

M: An article about this guy … Frane … Selak. They’ve called him the unluckiest man in the world. It looks like he’s had an unbelievable life.

W: Unbelievable? How?

M: Well … It started in the 1960s. He says he was on a train that came off the tracks and crashed into a river — he survived but the other 17 people died!

W: Lucky.

M: Frane did break his arm, though. Anyway, the next year he was flying on a small plane, which also crashed. Just as it was about to crash, one of the doors opened — the article says it had a fault — and he was sucked out. He escaped unhurt but nobody on the plane survived.

W: That’s unbelievable!

M: I know. Then a few years later, Frane was in a bus accident. There was heavy rain and the bus lost control on the wet road and crashed into a river. He survived, although 20 people drowned. Then Frane was in a car that caught fire while he was driving it on the motorway. He managed to get out with seconds to spare before the fuel tank exploded.

W: I don’t know whether he’s unlucky or extremely lucky, but I don’t think I ever want to travel with this guy.

(Text 10)

W: About two years ago I went with my class on our first school trip — five days in Paris! There were about thirty of us and four teachers. We all went in one big coach from our school in London. The teachers told us to be at school at four thirty in the morning. Everyone was there on time, but the coach didn’t arrive until five o’clock and we didn’t leave until five thirty! We were very cold and tired.

Anyway, the coach was very comfortable and we watched a DVD and listened to some music on the journey. We had some sandwiches and drinks with us, so we went straight to Paris without stopping. The hotel was very old, but our room was nice and the bed was great! I shared the room with three other girls.

When we went shopping I tried to practice my French a few times but sometimes I didn’t know the right words and spoke in English instead! The shops were great — I bought lots of presents, such as a dress for my mother, a bag for my dad and a T-shirt for my little sister!

I think what I enjoyed most was the boat trip. I took lots of photos of my friends and the wonderful art galleries. I was sad to leave Paris. I had a lovely time there.
