Lesson 1 The East and West Pagodas

Liu Siyu

I. Greeting

Good afternoon, boys and girls. Welcome to my class. My Chinese name is Liu Siyu. A beautiful name, right? My English name is Wendy. Do you know what Wendy means? It means courage or stands for the moon. I like jogging. You may often see me jog on the playground every morning. While I am jogging, I listen to some beautiful music. Do you like music? Now I like the songs: Stronger by Kelly and FLY. You must like them too.

Now your turn. Would you introduce yourself here and write down your Chinese name and English name on the blackboard. (choose 5 students, each class 5 to introduce themselves)

Thank you. And now let’s come to our course.

II. City locations.

1.     General introduction of the course. PPT1

The name of our course is called City Spots and City Games. Why do you need to learn more about interesting places in Quanzhou? Because now you have many chances to introduce Quanzhou to foreign friends. Then what are you going to talk? If you learn well in this class, you will be a better tour guide.

And why City Games? Because after visiting a place, we may feel bored and nothing to do. Why not play a simple game there and have fun!

2.     So today we are going to visit The East and West Pagodas in Kaiyuan Temple. PPT2

4.     What place are you going to visit today? Today we are going to visit the East and West Pagodas.

   Why do you choose this place to visit? Because they stand as a symbol and the pride of ancient Quanzhou City.

   How are they? The East Pagoda dates from the end of the Tang Dynasty.The East Pagoda is 48m high.

The West Pagoda is 44m high. The original pagodas were built of wood and later changed into brick, and then changed again into stone ones. From the base to the top, the whole pagodas are covered with exquisitely carved, vivid relief sculptures. Each of the octagonal pagodas has five storeys and upturned eaves.

反思：

因为上个学期上过一学期的选修课，感觉这次比较不会紧张。上学期只有36人，这次有57人，很多还是上学期选过课的同学，有一些是暑期参加过夏令营活动的学生。上课的整体氛围比较轻松活跃，同学们也都有上台去回答。但是时间不足。游戏只到第三步就下课了。
