01. My mother seemed to light up in his company, but even though I was very young, I could tell Mr Murdstone didn't like me at all.

在他的陪伴下我母亲似乎很高兴,但尽管我很小,我也能看出穆德斯通先生一点也不喜欢我。

02. I felt as if the air had been strangled[ˈstræŋɡl] out of me. Mr Murdstone was the kind of man that smothers[ˈsmʌðə(r)] all hope and happiness.

我觉得空气是窒息的。默德斯通先生是那种扼杀一切希望和幸福的人。

03. I shivered with fear, knowing that if I gave him the slightest excuse, he would beat me.我害怕得发抖,知道如果稍微辩解一下,他就会打我。

04. Things got worse when his sister came to live with us. Her face was full of gloom and cruelty. "I don't like boys" were the first words she spoke to me, and it seemed that whatever I said or did was wrong in his eyes.

当他姐姐来和我们住一起时,情况变得更糟了。她的脸上充满了阴郁和残酷。"我不喜欢男孩"是她对我说的第一句话,在他看来,无论我说什么或做什么都是错的。

05. The only escape I had was to lose myself in the small collection of books my father had left us. As I read, I imagined myself as the hero of each story and the Murdstones as the evil characters.

我唯一的解脱就是沉浸在父亲留给我们的少量藏书中。在我读的时候,我把自己想象成每一个故事的主人公,把默德斯通想象成邪恶的人物。

06. I walked up the stairs with my knees trembling. Mr Murdstone's heavy footsteps followed right behind me. As soon as we entered my bedroom he shut the door.

我双膝发抖地走上楼梯。默德斯通先生沉重的脚步紧跟在我身后。我们一进卧室,他就把门关上了。

07. No sooner had these words left my mouth that he grabbed hold of my head and began slapping me. I had to fight back. All those weeks of bullying and loneliness exploded in me.

我刚说完这些话,他就抓住我的头,开始扇我耳光。我不得不反击。那几个星期的欺凌和孤独在我心中爆发。

08. He yelped in pain and sprang backwards, letting go of my head in shock. He stared down in horror at the deep bite marks on his hand.

他疼得大叫一声,向后一跳,吃惊地放开我的头。他惊恐地低头看着他手上深深的咬痕。

09. My mother said a tearful goodbye to me the following morning, and after a long ride I arrived in front of a high wall with a sign reading "SALEM HOUSE". This was to be my new school.

第二天早上,我母亲含泪和我道别,在乘车很久以后,我来到一堵高墙前,墙上挂着一块写着"塞勒姆之家"的牌子。这将会是我的新学校。

10. Everything I saw dragged my spirits down further.

我所看到的一切都使我的情绪更加低落。

11. His hand suddenly shot out and grabbed my ear, pinching[pɪntʃ]; it tightly. Terror gripped me.

他的手突然伸出来抓住我的耳朵,用力拧着。我恐惧极了。

12. As soon as I'd said this, the dreadful man leaped out of his chair with a roar. I sprang out of the way and ran up to my dorm where I hid for two hours.

13. When his lips/face break into a smile, it is enough to melt any woman's heart

15. When term finished I was very excited at the thought of see my mother again.

16. The month passed incredibly slowly, and when it finally ended I was almost glad to be going back to school.

17. It felt as if my whole world had just been shattered.

18. When I finally went out into the playground, I felt the eyes of the other boys on me. I felt different, strange.

20. When they had gone, I realized I'd reached a major crossroads in my life.

21. I chased him for several minutes but I was no match for his horse. I fell further and further behind, until the cart completely disappeared from view. I slumped down at the side of the road. The half guinea[ˈɡɪni] and all my belongings were gone. I was now in a pit of total despair.

23. He paused for a second. I felt like my entire future rested on his reply.

29. A chill slid over my body. The more I thought about him, the more uncomfortable I became.

30. I stared at the high walls and shuddered[ˈʃʌdə(r)] as I thought of Mr Creakle. How I would have loved to storm inside and let all of the boys escape--like freeing caged sparrows.

我凝视着高墙,想到Mr Creakle就浑身发抖。我多么想冲进屋里,让所有的男孩逃走,就像释放笼中的麻雀一样。

31. I found it almost impossible to sleep that night. I tossed [tɒs] and turned as the thought of Uriah scheming[skiːm] to marry Agnes was simply too horrible to consider.

那天晚上我几乎无法入睡。想到乌里亚打算娶艾格尼丝,我就辗转反侧,简直太可怕了。

32. I sank down into a chair, completely shattered[ˈʃætə(r)].

33. He moaned in horror, started pulling his hair out, and beating his head with his own fists.

34. It didn't rain, which turned out to be a stroke of luck.
